Vaccines - an investment in fish health
The general trend in the industry is that preventive disease measures such as vaccination, is considered to be a necessary tool which give the industry an obvious beneficial cost/benefit ratio. Preventive disease measures are also an important part of the standards such as Global G.A.P. and Aquaculture Stewardship. Effective vaccines will help to ensure growth and reduce mortalities of farmed fish through immune protection against diseases and thereby also reduce the need for antibiotics.
PHARMAQ has developed a detailed “Economic value of fish vaccination” model for salmon. Detailed site, specie and regional specifications are key elements in the model deriving at a cost-benefit ratio. Ratios between 1:10 and 1:30 are frequently documented in this analysis model.
